An Astonishing Journal for Gentlemen

I read about this journal/blog on Kitsunenoir.com (the fox is black) almost a year ago, but forgot all about it, until I fell over my notes just seconds ago. It’s absolutely astonishing. I can’t understand how I forgot.
Grain & Gram – The New Gentleman’s Journal, is posting features and interviews with craftsmen and artist about their work and passion. Rarely have I seen a blog that is made so beautifully and with so thorough articles. The photographs are magnificent as well as the videos. I must admit, I have no idea whether it’s still running or not, because they, for some unknown reason, choose not to date their posts. Anyway, go check it out – maybe we are lucky to get some more.
I love the combination of the small illustrations and images in circles!

The images and video are from one of the features on the website. I suggest you pour yourself a big cup of coffee before jumping in, you wont be able to let it go again.

How to become a good Graphic Designer

I just finished a small course in typography and calligraphy lead by a mentor of mine, Steen Andersen, who is teaching at Copenhagen Technical Academy. In a few weeks I’m graduating as a Mediagraphic Designer, and it made me wonder: What is the most important things I have learned these past four years? Have I become more sure of my choices as a designer? More critical?
One of the most important thing I have learned, is that every designer should be able to argue for the choices he makes. Only by experience, hard work and education I will be able to do so. This will be my mantra. Well, it might just sound a bit trite, but I have learned, that graphic design solutions often are based on an intuitive feeling or a premonition. At least it should always be followed by a well argued reason. I say; don’t excuse your lack of knowledge by calling it ‘art’, call it well argued design – with a personal touch.
Funny thing is that, just as I asked myself these questions, I stumbled upon a couple of interesting interviews with skilled designer from all over the world, discussing questions every designer should consider answering themselves.
The next couple of weeks I will post the interviews I found most inspiring.

My inside spy

I don’t think I have ever told you guys about one of my favorite websites/blogs. The site is sort of a place where I go when I feel like I’m in a dreamy mood. Many of you might know it since it’s not a “new thing on the web” or anything, but The Selby has been a weekly thing for me for quite some time now. The man behind, Todd Selby is a portrait, interiors, and fashion photographer and illustrator. He started The Selby back in the summer 2008, and he is like an inside spy of creative people in their personal spaces. He meet so many amazing people, in magnificent homes – Check it out. (read about Todd in “About Selby”)
Nicklas – Oh, and sorry about the lack of posts.
UPDATE!
Flash designer goes clay

During my lunch break today, I bumped into an interview with a really cool woman. Meredith Dittmar is a 35 year old former Flash Designer/developer, who one day became full time clay-artist. As I wrote in the post yesterday about collages, I’m very inspired by the DIY way of working. I like the way Meredith describes her work process: “…throw it all into the brain blender and see what comes out…”, and I think the outcome of that way of thinking, is exactly what makes her work so great. It’s like thinking like a child. No worries, no boundaries, just plain creativity.
