An Astonishing Journal for Gentlemen

Copyright Grain & Gram

I read about this journal/blog on Kitsunenoir.com (the fox is black) almost a year ago, but forgot all about it, until I fell over my notes just seconds ago. It’s absolutely astonishing. I can’t understand how I forgot.

Grain & Gram – The New Gentleman’s Journal, is posting features and interviews with craftsmen and artist about their work and passion. Rarely have I seen a blog that is made so beautifully and with so thorough articles. The photographs are magnificent as well as the videos. I must admit, I have no idea whether it’s still running or not, because they, for some unknown reason, choose not to date their posts. Anyway, go check it out – maybe we are lucky to get some more.

I love the combination of the small illustrations and images in circles!

The images and video are from one of the features on the website. I suggest you pour yourself a big cup of coffee before jumping in, you wont be able to let it go again.

The DODOcase for your new iPad

Copyright DODOcase
Copyright DODOcase

I’ve had my iPad for a couple of months now, and I must say, that it’s by far the most useful gadget, I have ever had the chance of experiencing. Now, I rarely turn on my MacBook at home, and it always comes in handy when traveling or just at the coffee table. Anyway, a lot of stuff – and enough – has been said about the iPad, and since the second version is out now, I feel more like recommending a cover for it.

It’s quite expensive, but I like that there’s a story and a goal behind the DODOcase. The fact that it’s created with care and by hands of enthusiastic people is furthermore selling it for me. But mostly, I just think that it’s god damn cool. It feels, smells and looks cool. At the same time, the art of bookbinding is sort of being kept alive by adapting it to the future world of e-readers. Maybe it’s ‘bla bla’ – I don’t care, the story is good.

My DODOcase is blue.

A ‘pressing’ problem at Roskilde

Like last summer and the year before, I’m planning on attending Roskilde Festival. Urinal problems are a big issue at the festival, therefore a group of architects and representatives from various major cultural events discussed the problem at a seminar last night in Copenhagen. One of the suggestions on how to solve the hassle was by the dynamic Dutch duo, Aandeboom. The duo consists of the two designers Sam van Veluwe and Rogier Martens. Their clever bid for a urine solution was their so-called P-Tree, which basically is a plastic urinal which is clamped to a tree. The pee is then lead to a tank under the ground.

I think that might actually work, and it would be great to enjoy the music and parties without all that stench. Enough pee on a friday.

More pee-talk? Read about the seminar at pol.dk

Cooking with style

(via TFIB)

How do you feel about roasted duck tonight? William Hereford is showing you his recipe in a new and refreshingly beautiful way. Not only does the food look stunning, but also the visuals. After watching this, I immediately went out shopping for groceries.

Bon appetite

Guess a brand…

guess?

Graham Smith from “Im Just Creative”, posted an interesting thing earlier this month. Basically he is simplifying logos with only circles. I have been guessing a lot, and there is still a few that I can’t figure out on his blog. Try it yourself, can you recognize the brand behind the dots? See the result at the bottom, and check out more at imjustcreative.com

Pimp your Brooks

Last fall, my beloved bike was stolen downtown Copenhagen (I hope you’ll fall and bruise). Well maybe it’ll pop up some day, until then, I have found a new hobby. If you have a classic Brooks saddle you could get Kara Ginther to customize/pimp it for you. But if you don’t want to spend around $99 – $345, it actually looks kind of fun to do it yourself as well. I think it looks great! You can see more pictures of her work on flickr.

Note that if you carve you brooks leather saddle, it might not be weatherproof?!

Time for icecream

copyright frisko

The weather is almost there, but the branding behind my favorite ice cream, is sooo not there. In 1998 Frisko is dumped the old sun as logo. Instead they implemented an ugly and cheesy ‘ice cream heart’. I think that their visual identity is getting more and more corny.

If you ask me, icecream is not about exclusive golden boxes (as they wrap the ice in now a days) – in fact, I almost find that disgusting. It seems like they have no interest in CSR-policy. For me it’s about nature, countryside, pure materials and idyll. Go vintage! The image above is from Friskos first poster from 1972. I love it. Oh, and I love the prices.

Sharing made fun

I don’t think I have ever seen a more romantic plate. It’s made by the french designer Stéphanie Marin, in association with chef Mauro Colagreco. I would love to sit with a bottle of blanc wine, and this tree of strawberries sharing it with someone close.

I judge a book by its cover

I must admit, that I am the kind of person who generally gets manipulated by beautiful packaging. When it comes to wine, books and food, I normally choose the more tasteful or even beautiful package (Well, of course I also chose recommended books and music, and also if I know the author is remarkable). If I read a book, I get irritated if the cover is inappropriate, I can’t explain why. The worst thing about the hilarious and great book “Populærmusik fra Vittula” by Mikael Niemi, which I just finished, is the hideous cover.
The cover above must be my favorite; I love the vintage photo combined with the handwritten tittle in the black cloud, and also the contrast between the book-spine and the front. It fits perfect! More about Natalie Smith, who designed the cover, her thoughts behind and more images at faceoutbooks.com

Posters en masse

Yesterday, my boss, a colleague and I went on a small trip to the Danish Museum of Art & Design in Bredgade, Copenhagen. We went to see the exhibition: “Images of the world: The Global Poster” to get some inspiration. The exhibition consisted of more than 300 poster, a lot of them beautiful and in many varying styles. I would have preferred to see the posters in chronological order, instead of themes, but still I would definitely recommend people in the area to go and see it. The beautiful poster above was my favorite from the exhibition: It is designed by Japanse designer Yusaku Kamekura (1915–1997) in 1983 and called “Hiroshima Appeals”.

There is no entrance fee and it is open until 5th april.
